Ontario Place parking garage a symbol of all that is wrong

Turning a sow's ear into a silk purse is one thing, turning a 3,000-car parking garage into a major waterfront attraction quite another. But if Ontario Premier Doug Ford is to be believed — difficult at the best of times — the massive five-storey structure will play an important part in the success of his highly dubious Ontario Place remake. According to Ontario tourism minister Stan Cho, however, not only will the $400-million shoebox draw drivers from across the city, province and even country, it will actually generate $60 million for provincial coffers annually, or about $160,000 daily, 365 days a year. That may sound a bit exaggerated but Cho blithely assures skeptics, Ford's shiny new complex will attract no fewer than 6 million visitors annually.

From flights to cellphone bills, Canadians get a raw deal. This is why — and how Mark Carney can fix it

With Canadians across the country avoiding the United States like plague, many are looking to other ends of the country for their summer vacations. And they are, most likely, coming to a realization: Travelling across this country is really damn expensive. Base airfares from Canada's two main air carriers on major routes have tripled in just five years, leaving Canadians wondering if a trip to Europe might be more economical.

Netanyahu denounces Israeli newspaper report that IDF soldiers have orders to shoot at Palestinians seeking aid

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz emphatically rejected a report in the left-leaning Israeli daily Haaretz on Friday, which claimed Israeli soldiers were ordered to shoot at Palestinians approaching aid sites inside Gaza. They called the report's findings 'malicious falsehoods designed to defame' the military. They called the report's findings 'malicious falsehoods designed to defame' the military. More than 500 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds more wounded while seeking food since the newly formed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began distributing aid in the territory about a month ago, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

‘Let them do their dirty work': School trustees react as Ford government takes over 4 boards, including Toronto public and Catholic, over finances

The province has seized control of four school boards, including Toronto public and Catholic, accusing them of financial mismanagement — an unprecedented crackdown that drew both criticism but also praise from trustees who've been stripped of their powers. With the Dufferin-Peel Catholic board 'at the brink of bankruptcy' and unlikely to make payroll later this summer, Education Minister Paul Calandra said he is also sending a supervisor there, as well as to Ottawa's public board.
